Windows Defender is a built-in anti-malware program that is available with every Windows 10 or 11 device. It’s performed well in tests by three independent organisations and has a few key features that help it stand out, including cloud backup and parental controls. It’s not a one-stop solution for protection against all threats, however. Other top antivirus software programs offer extras such as a VPN and password manager along with a full range of device security and malware.
The Windows Security dashboard shows how everything’s running on your system and displays green ticks to indicate that everything is in order and red ones indicating things that require attention. It’s easy for you to see the things you need to take care of, although navigating the different settings screens can be difficult.
Microsoft Defender offers various standard security features, such as real-time scanning and blocking suspicious connections. It also blocks malicious apps from altering settings of the system and prevent malware from launching from running memory. It can also give you advice on account password changes and other issues. There are also OS security features like code isolation, virtualisation and hardware defences.
Windows Security also has a knowledgebase that offers solutions to common problems, and a search engine in case you can’t find what you’re looking for. Community videos are available to demonstrate how to make the most of every feature. Two incidents of technical support are included for free and you can pay more if needed.
